Reducing the population levels of harmful bacteria can effectively reduce the occurrence of dental problems such as bleeding and swollen gums and can also treat gum disease. It is bacteria left uncontrolled which is the responsible for causing oral problems, that is why we should be vigilant in preventing these microbes that are always present in the mouth from spreading and causing infection. Engaging in unhealthy practices and certain behaviors like smoking, tobacco use, alcohol use, poor oral hygiene, living a stressful life, poor diet and failing to keep the body hydrated can make an individual vulnerable for gum diseases. Having the knowledge about what can contribute to gum problems can make you aware what you need to do to take care of your teeth and gums.

It has been mistakenly believed by many the bleeding gums when people brush or floss is a normal thing. The swelling and bleeding of the gums may signal that you are having gum infections. The infection can spread, destroying the structures that support your teeth when nothing is done to the condition. Teeth can eventually become loose, may shift that there will be a need for tooth extraction. Periodontal disease refers to the infection of the teeth structures which includes the gums, ligaments and alveolar bone. The bacterial infection affects the gums during the earliest stage of periodontal disease called gingivitis. When periodontal disease becomes more severe, all of the tissues are involved or affected.

Measures to establish a good program of oral hygiene includes brushing teeth at least twice a day, daily flossing and the use of an all natural oral rinse prevent gum problems such as bleeding and swollen gums. Individuals having arthritis condition can have dexterity problems may find it hard to have good oral hygiene and this may require frequent professional care such as dental cleanings. People with gum disease must realize that bad gum condition is a chronic inflammatory disease and the only way to maintain affected teeth and gums is to have a lifelong regimen of excellent hygiene and professional maintenance with a dental hygienist or a periodontist.

To prevent gum infections, brush your teeth correctly at least twice a day, floss, and see your dentist regularly. Don't wait until it hurts. See your dentist for preventive checkups and professional cleanings. Regular visits are the best way to prevent trouble and unnecessary expense. If gum disease is not treated, the gums may swell, forming a little pocket around the tooth. Plaque collects in this and cannot be removed by a toothbrush. When plaque is left on the teeth it may harden to form tartar. A dentist, dental hygienist or periodontist begins treatment by first giving thorough instructions on at-home oral hygiene. He or she will then remove the plaque and tartar on the teeth above and below the gum, by a procedure called scaling and root planning.

A predictable way to conceal unsightly, sensitive or exposed surfaces of the root and to prevent future and further receding gums is through a periodontal surgery. Surgical procedures are great ways to enhance the appearance of unsightly teeth and gums that you feel unhappy about. When teeth is covered with toot much tissue, periodontal surgery can help correct this problem. It is during this procedure that the excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. The purpose of the periodontal surgery is to improve periodontal health, as well as, to create a beautiful smile. Soft tissue graft is another cosmetic procedure which is used to hide unsightly tooth roots, reduce receding gums and protect the roots from decay and eventual loss.

The plaque that has hardened on your teeth is called tartar or sometimes called calculus. Gums tissue can become irritated when tartar forms at and underneath the gumline, causing swollen gums to occur. Tartar gives plaque more surface area on which to grow and a much stickier surface to adhere to, which can lead to more serious conditions, such as cavities, swollen gums and gum disease.

Your teeth's health and gum health are not only threatened by tartar but it can be a cosmetic problem as well. One thing is that tartar absorbs stains easily for the fact that it is more porous, making teeth and smile look unattrative. And this gives a clearer reason why plaque and tartar prevention becomes important to a coffee or tea drinker, specially to a smoker.

The best thing that can be done when someone has periodontal disease is to work at controlling the factors which will bring on the full disease process. At each hygiene appointment, periodontal screenings are performed. To painlessly measure the depth of the periodontal pocket, a periodontal probe is used. With very little pressure the probe is slipped down next to the root of the tooth until there is resistance. The mark which is then at the gum line demonstrates the depth of the gum pocket. Remember that a healthy gum do not bleed and do not have periodontal pockets. Take care of oral and dental health by having a good program of oral hygiene.
