Periodontal disease is known to be a chronic gum infection that slowly attacks and destroys he gums and the bones that supports the teeth. At each hygiene appointment, periodontal screenings are performed. To painlessly measure the depth of the periodontal pocket, a periodontal probe is used. With very little pressure the probe is slipped down next to the root of the tooth until there is resistance. The mark which is then at the gum line demonstrates the depth of the gum pocket.
