The swelling of the gums is definitely and abnormal response to the normal bacteria that are present inside the oral cavity. Aside form bacterial infection caused by dental plaque, hormonal change, pregnancy and puberty may also play a role in contributing to swollen gums. Deficiency conditions and certain diseases may also result in swelling of gums such as vitamin C deficiency, leukemia - cancer of blood cells, abnormal growth of the gums or tumors, which may found harmless or can be cancerous, and the side effects of certain medications that are taken by patients that may result in increased size of gums.
